1. Avocado

Aloe vera also contains enzymes that repair damaged cells on the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.

4. Egg

Eggs are a powerhouse of nutrients for hair, containing protein, biotin, and vitamins A, D, and E.

Protein repairs and strengthens hair follicles (especially since hair is made of keratin, a type of protein), while biotin promotes hair growth and thickness.

5. Rosemary and Clove

Rosemary and clove are natural hair steaming ingredients

Rosemary and cloves are two ingredients that have recently taken the haircare world by storm.

Here’s why:

I prepare my rosemary and cloves oil myself at home using this method:

  • I add equal amounts of rosemary and cloves (one or two tsp) in a small bowl.
  • I add coconut or olive oil and mix.
  • I place the small bowl in a pot of boiling water and cover it for 7-10 minutes.
  • I remove the bowl from the pot and leave the mixture in it for 48 hours.
  • Then, I sieve it and store the oil in a bottle.

6. Coconut Oil

A popular choice for hair care, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize and strengthen it from within.

It helps prevent protein loss, reduce frizz, and protect hair from environmental damage.

Coconut oil also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help treat scalp infections and dandruff.

7. Pawpaw

Also known as papaya, pawpaw is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which promote healthy hair growth.

It helps nourish the scalp, repair damaged hair, and add shine and volume to dull, lifeless locks.

8. Turmeric

Beyond its kitchen uses, turmeric is prized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

When you apply it to the scalp, turmeric can soothe irritation, reduce dandruff, and promote a healthy scalp environment for optimal hair growth.

9. Olive oil

This kitchen staple is also a powerhouse for hair care.

Olive oil contains antioxidants, vitamins E and K, and fatty acids that nourish and moisturize the hair.

It helps to repair damage, reduce split ends, and add shine and softness to dry, brittle hair.

10. Shea butter

Extracted from the nuts of the shea tree, shea butter is a rich emollient that locks in moisture and prevents dryness and breakage.

It contains vitamins A and E, as well as fatty acids that nourish the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.

Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe a dry, irritated scalp.

11. Onions and Garlic

While the pungent smell may be off-putting, onions and garlic are rich in sulfur, a mineral essential for hair health.

Sulfur helps strengthen hair follicles, reduce hair loss, and promote thicker, healthier hair growth.

Onions and garlic also have antimicrobial properties that can help combat scalp infections and dandruff.

Here’s one method of using onions and garlic for hair:

  • Chop one medium-sized onion and three to five garlic.
  • Add one spoonful of instant coffee and water.
  • Boil on low heat for about five minutes.
  • Sieve the mixture and use the water for hair steaming.

How to Steam Hair at Home Without a Steamer

You don’t have a steaming cap?

No problem!

I also steam my hair without a steamer.

Here’s the trick:

  • Start by washing your hair with a gentle shampoo and detangling it thoroughly.
  • Apply your hair mask or blend of natural ingredients to damp hair, focusing on the roots and ends.
  • Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag.
  • Grab a towel, soak it briefly, wring it, and place it in a microwave for a few minutes.
  • If there’s no microwave, dip the towel in hot water and squeeze it out thoroughly (can be dangerous, so be extra careful!).
  • Wrap the steamed towel around the shower cap on your head and cover it with another shower cap or plastic bag.
  • Allow your hair to steam for about 30 minutes, then wash it out!

This is an alternative way to steam your hair until you get a steamer cap.

Steamer caps are easier to use and also more effective.
