11+ Effective Natural Hair Steaming Ingredients
You probably have these ingredients right at home, and they can work wonders for your hair. Here you go!
1. Avocado
This creamy fruit is packed with vitamins A, D, and E, and natural oils that deeply moisturize and nourish the hair.
Avocado also contains biotin, which strengthens the hair shaft, prevents breakage and encourages healthy growth.
Simply mash or blend the fleshy part of two or three avocados to form a paste. Then, apply it to your hair and steam it in.
2. Banana
Rich in potassium and vitamins A, C, and E, bananas help to improve hair elasticity, preventing breakage and split ends.
The natural oils in bananas also hydrate the scalp, reducing dandruff and promoting overall scalp health.
Blend three or four bananas (depending on your hair). You can add a few drops of hair oil before applying it for steaming.
3. Aloe vera
Known for its soothing and hydrating properties, aloe vera is an excellent hair care ingredient.
It moisturizes the scalp, reduces inflammation, and promotes hair growth by stimulating dormant hair follicles.
Aloe vera also contains enzymes that repair damaged cells on the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.
Peel off the leaf from an aloe vera plant and scoop out the gel with a spoon. Alternatively, buy ready-made aloe vera gel.
4. Egg
Eggs are a powerhouse of nutrients for hair, containing protein, biotin, and vitamins A, D, and E.
Protein repairs and strengthens hair follicles (especially since hair is made of keratin, a type of protein), while biotin promotes hair growth and thickness.
Eggs also contain lecithin, which moisturizes the hair and adds shine.
Whisk one or two eggs and apply to your hair. If you don’t want white residues in your hair after steaming, separate the egg white and apply only the yolk to your hair.
5. Rosemary and Clove
Rosemary and cloves are two ingredients that have recently taken the haircare world by storm.
Here’s why:
The two ingredients have stimulating properties, which promote blood circulation to the scalp and encourage hair growth. Rosemary oil also has antimicrobial properties that can help treat dandruff and scalp infections, while cloves oil adds a warm, refreshing scent to your hair care routine.
I prepare my rosemary and cloves oil myself at home using this method:
- I add equal amounts of rosemary and cloves (one or two tsp) in a small bowl.
- I add coconut or olive oil and mix.
- I place the small bowl in a pot of boiling water and cover it for 7-10 minutes.
- I remove the bowl from the pot and leave the mixture in it for 48 hours.
- Then, I sieve it and store the oil in a bottle.
6. Coconut Oil
A popular choice for hair care, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize and strengthen it from within.
It helps prevent protein loss, reduce frizz, and protect hair from environmental damage.
Coconut oil also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help treat scalp infections and dandruff.
Coconut oil is pretty stressful to prepare at home. Unless you need a lot at once, it’s better to buy coconut oil. However, ensure you’re buying cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil.
7. Pawpaw
Also known as papaya, pawpaw is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which promote healthy hair growth.
It helps nourish the scalp, repair damaged hair, and add shine and volume to dull, lifeless locks.
Mash or blend pawpaw, add any hair oil and apply the paste to your hair for steaming.
8. Turmeric
Beyond its kitchen uses, turmeric is prized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
When you apply it to the scalp, turmeric can soothe irritation, reduce dandruff, and promote a healthy scalp environment for optimal hair growth.
However, turmeric adds a bright yellow hue to hair. If you don’t want that on your hair, you should opt for some other hair ingredient.
9. Olive oil
This kitchen staple is also a powerhouse for hair care.
Olive oil contains antioxidants, vitamins E and K, and fatty acids that nourish and moisturize the hair.
It helps to repair damage, reduce split ends, and add shine and softness to dry, brittle hair.
You can mix olive oil with an essential oil (like rosemary or peppermint oil) for extra benefits.
10. Shea butter
Extracted from the nuts of the shea tree, shea butter is a rich emollient that locks in moisture and prevents dryness and breakage.
It contains vitamins A and E, as well as fatty acids that nourish the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.
Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe a dry, irritated scalp.
Pure, unrefined shea butter is best for hair, and you can get it easily in stores.
11. Onions and Garlic
While the pungent smell may be off-putting, onions and garlic are rich in sulfur, a mineral essential for hair health.
Sulfur helps strengthen hair follicles, reduce hair loss, and promote thicker, healthier hair growth.
Onions and garlic also have antimicrobial properties that can help combat scalp infections and dandruff.
Here’s one method of using onions and garlic for hair:
- Chop one medium-sized onion and three to five garlic.
- Add one spoonful of instant coffee and water.
- Boil on low heat for about five minutes.
- Sieve the mixture and use the water for hair steaming.
Vela Tip: Did you know? You can mix these ingredients to create a hair mask for hair steaming. For example, you can blend avocado, banana, pawpaw, and egg and mix it with coconut oil. You’ll be infusing your hair with so many nutrients, and dear, your hair will thank you for it!
How to Steam Hair at Home Without a Steamer
You don’t have a steaming cap?
No problem!
I also steam my hair without a steamer.
Here’s the trick:
- Start by washing your hair with a gentle shampoo and detangling it thoroughly.
- Apply your hair mask or blend of natural ingredients to damp hair, focusing on the roots and ends.
- Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag.
- Grab a towel, soak it briefly, wring it, and place it in a microwave for a few minutes.
- If there’s no microwave, dip the towel in hot water and squeeze it out thoroughly (can be dangerous, so be extra careful!).
- Wrap the steamed towel around the shower cap on your head and cover it with another shower cap or plastic bag.
- Allow your hair to steam for about 30 minutes, then wash it out!
This is an alternative way to steam your hair until you get a steamer cap.
Steamer caps are easier to use and also more effective.
